SIMPLE 3 CARD MIND READING TRICK
Reveal a spectator’s secretly chosen card using only three ordinary playing cards and a simple principle that is surprisingly easy to learn.
THE EFFECT
Your spectator thinks of one of three cards while your back is turned. They leave their chosen card where it is, secretly swap the other two cards, then turn all three face down.
You turn back around, mix the cards yourself, and somehow reveal the card they were only thinking of.
This routine is sometimes known as the Blind Three Card Monte.
WHAT YOU NEED
No gimmicks or special cards are required.
STEP 1 - LAY OUT THE CARDS
Place the two black Aces and the red Queen face up in a row.
Tell the spectator you are going to turn away. While your back is turned, ask them to think of one card, leave that card exactly where it is, and secretly swap the positions of the other two cards.
Remember: Their chosen card never moves.
STEP 2 - SWAP THE OTHER TWO CARDS
For example, if they choose the Ace of Spades, they leave it where it is and swap the red Queen with the Ace of Clubs.
The important part is simple: the card they are thinking of stays in its original position.
STEP 3 - TURN THE CARDS FACE DOWN
Ask the spectator to turn all three cards face down. Once they are finished, turn back around and face the table.
You have not seen which card they chose or how the cards were moved.
STEP 4 - MIX THE CARDS
Mix the face-down cards around on the table. This makes the effect feel much more impossible.
While mixing, secretly keep track of the card currently in the centre and make sure that same card finishes back in the centre position.
You can freely move the two outside cards around. The only thing that matters is knowing which card was in the centre when you turned around.
STEP 5 - PICK UP THE CARDS
Pick up the cards from left to right and keep them in the same order.
Keep your handling casual. You do not want the spectator thinking that the position of any particular card matters.
STEP 6 - REVEAL THEIR CARD
Fan the three cards and act as though you are concentrating on the spectator.
The secret is the middle card:
Pause for a moment, look at the spectator, then confidently name the card they were thinking of.
That’s it. It appears that you have discovered a card that existed only in their mind.

- Name the card confidently. You are supposedly reading their mind, not making a guess.
