POKER FACE
A spectator freely selects any card from the deck and returns it without the magician ever needing to know what it is.
The deck is then cut, burying the selection somewhere near the middle.
You explain that this is not an ordinary deck. It is surprisingly good at reading people, so the spectator will need to keep their best poker face.
As you slowly riffle through the cards, you tell them that the deck is watching their expression. If their face changes even slightly when they see their card, the deck will know.
You begin the riffle.
Card after card passes by until the deck suddenly stops on its own.
The card at that exact position is revealed to be the spectator's selection.
THE SECRET
Before performing, prepare one card as a key card.
Carefully trim a very small amount from the top-right and bottom-left corners. You only need to remove enough material for your fingertip to catch the card while riffling through the deck.
Important: Do not trim too much. The card should look completely normal when viewed by the spectator.
Keep the prepared key card on top of the deck.
After the spectator chooses a card, place their selection directly on top of the key card. Cut the deck so both cards are moved into the middle while remaining together.
When you riffle through the deck, your finger will naturally catch on the trimmed corners of the key card.
That tells you exactly where to stop.
The spectator's selected card will be sitting directly next to it, allowing you to reveal their card as though the deck detected a change in their expression.
PRESENTATION IDEA
Tell the spectator:
"This deck is actually pretty good at reading people. All you have to do is keep a good poker face.
I'm going to riffle through the cards, and the deck is going to watch your expression. If it notices even the slightest reaction when your card goes by, it's going to stop."
Begin riffling through the deck while watching the spectator rather than your hands.
When your finger catches the key card, stop immediately.
Pause for a moment, then reveal their selected card.
The secret is simple, but the poker face presentation gives the method a reason and makes the reveal feel much more impossible.
