Coin Squeeze

Coin Squeeze is a clever coin penetration effect using a small metal tube made from two rings and a center plug. The spectator can examine everything, place the coins into the tube themselves, and then watch as a quarter apparently passes straight through the solid metal plug.

The secret is simple, but the handling makes the effect very convincing.

DIFFICULTY: Beginner / Intermediate

PROPS:

  • 2 Coin Squeeze rings
  • 1 center plug
  • 5 quarters
  • Optional: a magic wand or similar object for tapping the tube

PRACTICE: Spend a little time learning exactly how firmly you can handle the tube without accidentally releasing the hidden coin.

The Gimmick

The two rings snap together to form a small tube, with the solid plug trapped between them.

The important secret is that the assembled tube can retain a quarter when it is turned upside down.

For example, if you place four quarters into the tube and turn it over, only three quarters will actually fall out. One quarter remains hidden against the underside of the plug.

A light tap against the side of the tube causes that hidden quarter to release.

That is what creates the illusion that the coin has somehow penetrated through the solid metal plug.

Preparation

You will use five quarters, but the spectator should believe there are only four.

Before beginning, secretly hide one quarter in your LEFT hand.

Keep your hand relaxed and natural. You do not need to tightly grip the coin.

You are now ready to perform.

Step 1: Assemble the Tube

Place the plug into one of the rings.

Place the second ring on top and snap the two rings together tightly.

You should now have what appears to be a solid metal tube with the plug running directly through its center.

Step 2: Let Them Examine Everything

Hand the assembled tube to your spectator and allow them to examine it.

Have them confirm that the center is completely blocked by the solid plug and that there appears to be no possible way for a quarter to pass through it.

You can also allow them to examine the four visible quarters.

Remember, they should never know that you are secretly holding a fifth quarter.

Once they are satisfied, ask the spectator to drop all four visible quarters into the top of the tube.

Step 3: Secretly Get One Ahead

Take the tube with your RIGHT hand.

Turn it upside down and apparently dump all four quarters into your LEFT hand.

Because of the gimmick, only three quarters actually fall from the tube.

The fourth quarter remains secretly retained underneath the plug.

Since your left hand was already hiding an extra quarter, you now appear to be holding the same four quarters the spectator just placed into the tube.

Important: Do not draw attention to the coins as they fall. Simply dump them naturally into your hand.

Step 4: Place the Tube Down

The tube is now upside down with one quarter secretly retained underneath it.

Gently place the tube onto the table.

Do not slam it down or tap it against the surface, since this could accidentally release the hidden coin.

You now have:

  • 4 visible quarters in your hand
  • 1 hidden quarter underneath the tube

You are now one coin ahead.

Step 5: The Penetration

Pick up the four visible quarters and place them into the top of the tube one at a time.

Count them aloud:

"One... two... three... four."

This reinforces the idea that all four quarters are sitting above the solid metal plug.

Now tap the side of the tube.

You can use:

  • Your finger
  • A magic wand
  • Another small object

The tap releases the quarter that was secretly retained underneath the tube.

Lift the tube straight up.

A quarter is now sitting on the table.

To the spectator, one of the four quarters has somehow passed straight through the solid metal plug.

That's the moment. Give them a second to react before continuing.

Step 6: Secretly Reset

There are now three visible quarters remaining inside the tube.

Turn the tube over and pour those three quarters into your hand.

Continue rotating the tube until it has turned a full 180 degrees from its previous position.

Because of the gimmick, one of the quarters will once again remain secretly retained underneath the plug.

Gently place the tube back onto the table.

You are now secretly set up again with a quarter underneath the tube.

This allows you to repeat the penetration using the same basic handling.

Handling Tips

  • Keep the tube level. Once a coin is secretly retained underneath, avoid unnecessary movement.
  • Handle everything casually. The more carefully you appear to handle the tube, the more suspicious it can look.
  • Do not rush the reveal. After tapping the tube, pause briefly before lifting it.
  • Count the coins aloud. This makes the penetration much stronger because the spectator believes they know exactly where every coin is.
  • Practice the tap. Learn how much force is needed to release the hidden quarter without making the method obvious.
  • Use a soft surface. A close-up mat helps keep the released quarter quiet and prevents it from bouncing or rolling away.

Why It Works

The clever part of Coin Squeeze is that the spectator's attention stays focused on the solid plug.

They believe the only question is:

"How can a coin possibly get through that piece of metal?"

In reality, the penetration has already been secretly prepared before the visible coins are placed into the tube.

The hidden fifth quarter lets you stay one step ahead while the tube's retaining feature does the rest.

Once you understand the one-ahead principle and can control the retained coin consistently, the trick becomes very easy to perform.
