Review public profile details, discovery settings, old posts, connected apps and unused accounts without exposing more information during cleanup.

Find the accounts you still control

Start with platforms you use now and accounts tied to an email address you can still access. Search old inboxes for service names or account notices if you need reminders, but do not use a third-party tool that asks for your social password. Prioritize profiles that reveal a home location, daily routine, workplace, family details or contact information.

Review what strangers can see

Open the profile as a logged-out visitor when possible. Check profile fields, older posts, photos, location tags, friend or follower lists, and search-engine visibility. Review who can find the account by email or phone number. Privacy settings can reduce access, but other people may have copied or reshared information already.

Remove access you no longer need

Review connected apps and websites in account security settings. Revoke integrations you do not use or recognize, then confirm important services still work. Check login alerts, devices and recovery details. If an unfamiliar session appears, follow the platform’s official steps and replace a reused password.

Close an unused account carefully

Download information you want to keep, remove content you no longer want public where possible, cancel paid features and check whether the account is used to sign in elsewhere. Use the platform’s official deletion process. Deactivation and permanent deletion may be different, and a waiting period may apply. Save a confirmation without keeping sensitive screenshots or documents in a shared folder.

Settings and menus change. Use the platform’s current help pages, and avoid relying on screenshots or instructions that may refer to an older version.

Step-by-step plan

  1. Inventory accounts you can access

Prioritize accounts with public names, location, contact details or old posts.

  2. Check profile visibility and discovery

Review who can find and view your profile, connections and posts.

  3. Export then close unused profiles

Where possible, save important content and follow the platform’s official deletion instructions.

Make these actions your own

Frequently asked questions

Do privacy settings control information already copied by others?

No. They change access to your profile going forward, but do not reliably remove screenshots, reposts, or copies already made.

Should I delete every old account?

Close accounts you no longer need after checking subscriptions, saved data, and services that rely on them for sign-in or recovery.
