OUR METHODOLOGY

How we research and evaluate.

Useful privacy advice shows its evidence, explains its limits, and makes clear what was researched or actually tested.

AT A GLANCE

Research-based coverage is not a hands-on test. We do not treat a provider statement or a published audit as proof of every current system practice.

Start with the question

A comparison should answer a practical question: who can use the service, which problem it addresses, and which trade-offs could change the decision. We do not assume one product is best for everyone.

The criteria depend on the use case. Email coverage may examine encryption boundaries and account recovery. A data-removal comparison may examine coverage, follow-up and information required to submit a request. VPN coverage may examine account requirements, logging claims and the scope of published assessments.

Choose sources that support the claim

  • Provider documentation supports descriptions of published policies, features, supported devices and plan terms. It is identified as provider material.
  • Independent reports and audits can add evidence within their stated scope, date and methodology. An assessment of one application does not establish the behavior of an entire service indefinitely.
  • Official public resources are preferred for account-deletion instructions, regulator guidance and privacy-rights starting points.
  • Direct testing supports only the behavior observed under the documented conditions. A successful check is not a guarantee that every device, location or future release behaves the same way.

A source should be linked near the claim it supports or in the page's source section. An unrelated reference does not make an unsupported claim verified.

Distinguish research from testing

Research only means the profile is based on available documentation and other identified sources. It does not mean Vanishio measured performance, audited infrastructure or exercised every feature.

Hands-on testing should identify what was actually tried, the relevant environment and the date. We do not label a product tested simply because its website was read or an outside review described a test.

Needs review or unknown means a material detail has not been adequately checked. Missing information is a reason to state uncertainty, not to invent an answer.

Explain the important limits

Privacy claims often depend on configuration, account state, payment method, jurisdiction or plan level. We try to distinguish those conditions from a product's headline description.

For example, a no-activity-logging claim may coexist with account, payment or support records. Open-source client code does not prove every deployed server practice. An encrypted service may still have recovery and recipient-workflow limitations.

Prices, renewal rates, refund rules, supported platforms and regional eligibility can change. Confirm the provider's current terms before relying on an offer or making a purchase.

Comparisons, ratings and tier lists

Editorial ratings are an explanation of fit against stated criteria. They are not a security certification or a guarantee of outcomes.

When a page uses an outside tier list, it should identify the publisher and snapshot rather than imply that Vanishio produced the original ranking. A Vanishio change to a reference placement should have a reason. An unranked or discontinued service should be distinguished from a low letter tier.

We do not claim comparative speed, streaming, leak-protection or kill-switch testing that we have not performed. A lower reference tier alone does not prove that a service is unsafe.

Commercial relationships

Affiliate relationships may support the site financially. Commercial buttons and sponsored placements should be identified where they appear. Our editorial standard is that compensation must not determine a factual conclusion, hide a material limitation or turn an untested claim into a tested result.

Affiliate availability can affect which commercial offers are displayed. It should not be read as proof that the featured provider is the best option for every reader. See the affiliate disclosure.

Updates and corrections

A published date records when a page first appeared; a substantive-update date indicates a meaningful editorial change. Neither should be interpreted as a promise that every price or support link was rechecked on that day.

When you report an issue, include the Vanishio page URL, the specific statement or link, and the strongest relevant source you can find. We can then assess whether the page needs clarification, a correction or further research.

Send a correction or source suggestion. Please do not submit private account records or identity documents as evidence.
