A paid password manager with a Secret Key as part of its account security model; weigh recovery responsibilities, supported devices and subscription cost.
Product details checked on 2026-11-01.
1Password stores passwords and other sensitive items in a vault that can be used across supported devices. Its published security design uses an account password and a Secret Key as separate parts of its protection model. Read the current documentation to understand where the Secret Key is stored on your devices and what happens if you lose access.
Before adding important credentials, locate your Emergency Kit or other account recovery details and store them in a secure place separate from your everyday device. 1Password explains that it does not have a copy of your Secret Key and cannot recover it for you. Family and team plans may offer recovery workflows with different permissions; understand who can start recovery before relying on them.
Check the current plan, renewal price, family or business sharing needs, browser support, export options and what remains accessible if a subscription ends. A paid manager can be useful if its features fit your routine, but a subscription is not automatically safer than a well-maintained built-in option.
This is based on published documentation, not a hands-on security audit or comparative test. Use 1Password’s current security and recovery pages for account-specific steps. A vault can help you use unique credentials; it cannot protect an infected device or prevent you from approving a phishing prompt.
Before deciding, review current product documentation, service terms and plan details.
Official website1Password says it does not have a copy and cannot recover the Secret Key. Prepare the account recovery material before depending on the vault.
Not for everyone. Compare recovery, sharing, supported devices and cost with built-in options and your own needs.
