Obsidian keeps notes as files on your device, which makes it easy to choose your own backup system and leave without a proprietary export. If you enable sync or install community plugins, review the data flows first. A local vault is only as private as the device and backups that contain it.
What it offers
- Notes stored as local Markdown files
- No account required for local use
- Optional sync and community plugins
Limitations
- Sync is a separate service and is not the default local-only model.
- Plugins can access vault contents.
- The core app is not open source.
